Call for Altars & Procession Participants 2023 NOW OPEN!

Dia de los Muertos at Hemisfair, returns for our 11th Annual celebration on October 28 and 29, 2023, featuring altars produced by community members and local organizations, an art market,  live music, delicious food and a public procession on both Saturday and Sunday; an experience that has become a tradition for all.

ALTARS

Dia de los Muertos at Hemisfair was created to give space to the community to celebrate and honor loved ones who have passed. The altars are created with respect and reverence by local families, school groups, community members and organizations. We invite you to join in creating an altar and honoring your loved one.

Confirmed Altar builders will set up their altars on October 27, 2023 (time to be individually scheduled) and will leave their altars up for the duration of the festival: October 28 and 29, 2023. The Community Altar Exhibition is central to Muertos Fest and is open to all (while space lasts).

All altar applications are confidentially reviewed and selected. Applications will be selected on a rolling basis and will remain open until all spaces are filled. If space remains, altar applications will remain open until September 15, 2023.

Prizes will once again be awarded at the following levels:

PROCESSION

The Procession will feature community groups, dancers, puppets, mobile altars, performance groups, people-powered floats, schools and other groups paying tribute to those we have lost. Thousands of spectators both on site at Hemisfair and through a special broadcast on KSAT-12 will have the opportunity to view this year’s Procession.

This is the first time we will open the procession to the public. We have a limited number of spaces available for non-profits, schools, families, friends, performance groups, etc., to participate directly, by walking in the procession.

We encourage you to apply early for the best chance at securing your spot. Every Procession Participant will walk in honor of a person or group of people who have passed. We are open to a variety of entrants and encourage innovative forms of expression — hand-carried or wheeled altars, people-powered alebrijes or skeleton puppets, school or organizational groups, performance groups, etc. As the procession travels throughout the walkways of Hemisfair, no motorized vehicles will be allowed.
